Fisher's Tale
"Now, Zyn, when you are ever alone, scared... or just want someone to talk to, remember, your big sister's here." Circe said, cradling her three year old sister in her arms, "Always here."
Zyndrakk pulled up her blue overalls and positioned her tanned hat on her head. She wore a white blouse and blue sandals made out of a light form of leather that her father had collected for her family. Her blonde hair was tied back in a braid, and she was fully dressed with a bright smile plastered across her freckled face.
Circe, who walked alongside Zyndrakk, carried a bucket and some wooden fishing poles. She wore her hair back as well, however, only in a ponytail. Across her chest was a gray tank top and below her belt, she sported some navy colored shorts.
The day was in summer, and the sun beat down at an average temperature: perfect for Circe to teach her baby sister how to fish. A cool breeze floated through the atmosphere, filling the area with fresh air. The birds chirped and squirrels chattered, but nothing could have been more peaceful.
"When we get there, Circe?" Zyndrakk asked, "Zyn want to bring pet."
"Zyn will have to wait a bit longer. We're almost there."
Schizophrenia plagued Zyndrakk, and cause her learning to be off balance. She tried the best she could, and that was all Circe could ask for. Zyn often spent time alone with her sister, for the fear of being picked on and attacked often haunted Zyndrakk. She talked to people that were not real, and had issues with caring for herself. Circe was the only person that cared for her (aside from her mother).
When the two of them reached the river, Circe set down the bucket and the fishing poles while Zyndrakk ran ahead and jumped into the water playfully. Despite scaring the fish, Zyndrakk caused no harm. Her older sister watched her carefully, looking out for her safety, but she also loved to see her little sibling smile.
Zyndrakk splashed around in the water, enjoying the cool feel of the river on her skin. She did not care about her clothing- for all that Zyn was concerned with, the girl could have been naked and she wouldn't have even noticed.
Circe sat down on the grassy bank of the waterbed and pulled the fishing poles closer. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small wooden box. Setting it on the ground, Circe carefully opened the box and looked through the different hooks and lures that she had made in her spare time. She didn't want Zyn to be poked by the hook, so she purposefully chose a small lure. It was purple around the base of it, but neon green feathers shot out of the back, making the bait look appealing to the fish.
"Zyn, come over here. Let's catch something, yeah?" Circe offered after she had secured the lure on the smaller pole.
Zyndrakk bounded out of the water and plopped down right next to Circe, who knew that she would have to dry Zyndrakk's clothing later. "Zyn wants a blue one."
Circe chuckled and wrapped an arm around her sister's waist, pulling her closer. "We'll see, love."
The older girl, after putting the box away, handed her sister the pole. "Don't do anything with it, just yet." She warned, climbing to her feet and helping Zyndrakk to do the same.
"Did Zyn catch yet?"
"No, no. The bait," Circe pointed to the lure before stepping behind her sister, taking her by the wrist, "needs to be in the water first. Now, let me guide your arm, okay?"
Circe gently drew back her arm (Zyn's as well) and then propelled the lure forward and into the river. The lure didn't sink, however, it floated on the surface of the water in an attempt to trick the fish into taking a bite.
"Good!" Circe said proudly, "Now just let the lure rest on the water. The fish will think it is real-"
There was a splash of water around the bait, and almost immediately, Zyndrakk jerked the rod back, pulling the fake food out of the fish's mouth before it could get a strong grip. When Zyn noticed that she didn't catch the fish, she pouted and nearly started crying.
"It's okay. Let's try again."
After Zyndrakk was able to cast on her own, the two girls waited for hours. Through many casts and false takes, their day became late. Circe had patience, whereas Zyndrakk was getting angry, but she did not want to leave empty handed.
Finally, an hour later, Zyndrakk felt a tugging on the end of her rod. Looking down and into the water, she couldn't find her bait. It was gone; most likely buried deep in a fish's throat. Instantly, Zyndrakk began to pull the fish in. As it jumped out of the water, it revealed its golden, yellow belly and ocean blue scales, sharp fins and large size.
"Yes, Zyn! Good job!" Circe exclaimed, mentally measuring her sister's catch.
"Zyn catch!" the girl remarked excitedly.
When the fish was in Zyndrakk's hands, it proved to be at least a foot long. It looked beautiful up close, and Zyndrakk was not so keen on letting Circe put her new 'pet' into the bucket (that had been filled with water) until the older girl explained that the fish would die if it was not submerged in water.
"Zyn's gonna be a fisher."
Circe pat her sister on the head and gathered up the equipment. "Let's get home now. I think you've proven to Father that you can accomplish something."
Zyndrakk’s father was cruel. He would shut her in the basement during family activities due to her mental illness, he would often yell at her and belittle her, and he occasionally even hit her. Circe figured that the fish would prove that Zyndrakk could do something- that she wasn’t just a lost soul in a child’s body. Circe was determined to make her father understand.
Yes, Zyndrakk. Daddy will understand... I hope.
